About the Slater Center
The Slater Center was constructed in 1979 as a result of the need for community services in the Winbrook area in particular and White Plains , in general.
The Center was named in honor of the Rev. Thomas Henry Slater, an avid community leader and minister who pastored the Bethel Baptist Church , which is located directly adjacent to the Center. In 1982, a Board of Directors was formed and the Center became incorporated.
The mission of the Center is the prevention, eradication and reduction of the incidences and/or prevalence of social problems evolving as a result of a changing society. We address problems through the coordination of a comprehensive and quality system of integrated services, with a self-help approach, which is accepted by an informed community. A creative atmosphere is maintained, which is conducive to proper human service delivery.
Counseling services are provided on a continual basis. We advocate, inform, translate and communicate the needs and aspiration of the community; provide assistance in organizing leadership for the White Plains community; develop a referral system to cover human service; and explore other experimental projects outside the community that may reveal new directions.
Programs held at the Center have been screened and identified by staff of the Center as services that are beneficial to the White Plains community. The services cover basically all areas of need, directly or indirectly. The Center's hours are 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Special programs are accommodated on the weekends.
The Center maintains an alcohol and drug free environment |
